The other Catalan club: how Espanyol's Spanish founding turned the city's local derby into a fight over what 'Catalan' means

On 28 October 1900, eleven months after Hans Gamper founded FC Barcelona with a multinational cast of Swiss, English and German players, an engineering student called Ángel Rodríguez Ruiz and a group of his classmates at the University of Barcelona constituted the Sociedad Española de Foot-ball — the first football club in Spain founded exclusively by Spaniards. Both clubs are from Barcelona. Both play in Catalan-speaking dressing rooms. The Derbi barceloní has spent 125 years arguing about which one of them gets to call that Catalan.
