Camp Nou, 17 May 2014: the day Atléti broke the duopoly — and everything since
For most of the 21st century, La Liga has been a two-club property. Real Madrid and Barcelona have shared 22 of the last 25 titles. The three exceptions all carry a Rojiblanco crest, and the spine of the rivalry between Atlético Madrid and FC Barcelona is the day Atléti first cracked the duopoly open: 17 May 2014, the final round of the season, Camp Nou, a draw enough to win the league. Diego Costa lasted fourteen minutes before his hamstring went. Alexis Sánchez put Barça 1-0 up in the 34th. Then Diego Godín met a Gabi corner in the 49th and headed in the 1-1 that ended the game and the season — Atléti's first Liga title in 18 years and the first time in Camp Nou's then-67-year history that a visiting side had been crowned champion on its turf.
