Two clubs, one ikurriña: how Basque identity made — and reshaped — the derbi vasco
On 5 December 1976, Athletic Club captain José Ángel Iribar and Real Sociedad captain Inaxio Kortabarria walked out of the Atotxa tunnel in San Sebastián holding the ikurriña between them — the first time the Basque flag had been raised in public since Franco's death the previous November, and the first time it had been raised on a Spanish football pitch at all. Real Sociedad won 5–0 that afternoon, but the score was the footnote. The image was the headline: two rivals, one flag, jointly daring a state that had spent forty years criminalising the symbol. Across 197 meetings the Basque derby has run on this paradox — two clubs that have spent most of their history insisting on a Basque-only squad, defining themselves in opposition to each other while sharing the same cause.
