The fixture that started Spanish football: Real Madrid, Athletic, and the only two clubs that have never gone down

On 13 May 1902, ten months before the Spanish football federation existed, Real Madrid and Athletic Club met at Madrid's Hipódromo in the inaugural Copa de la Coronación — the tournament thrown together to mark Alfonso XIII's coronation that produced the first Clásico the same week. Madrid won 3-1. It is the oldest fixture in Spanish football still being played, and Madrid and Athletic are two of the only three clubs — alongside Barcelona — that have never been relegated from La Liga in the 95 years since the league was founded in 1929. Real Madrid spent that century stockpiling European Cups; Athletic, refusing to sign a single player who wasn't Basque, spent it stockpiling Copas del Rey.
